Traditionally, Budapest used to be a city full of cafes and little pastry shops where people would sit around for hours and chat over a cup of cofee and some custard cream cake. However, the cafes disappeared after the world war and only recently started to reappear.
Today, there is a new cafe boom happening in Budapest and there are dozens of new ones every year around the city. If you are into pastries, try the cafes with the sign "Cukraszda" where you will find a large selection of sweets to compliment your coffee. If you are a serious coffee drinker, you should try the cafes called "Kavehaz" or "Kavezo," both of which simply mean "coffee house."
The most popular cafes are naturally in the tourist areas, such as Vaci utca or Liszt Ferenc ter. But the entire Andrassy ut is a good place to find good cafes and nice surroundings. Also, don't forget to try the "Muzeum" cafe right next to the National Museum.
