Hungary and Budapest in Pictures - High Tatra, Lomnicz Peak, Kopa Pass

The North East part of the Tatra is equally rich in beautiful scenery. The Lomnicz Peak (2635 meters), which was formerly considered the highest peak of the Tatra, can be ascended in 6 hours from Tatrafured. The ascent is not without difficulty, but the view, although not quite open on all sides, is magnificent. The ascent of the Schiagendorf Peak (2453 meters) is much easier, whereas that of the Mittelgrat (2440 meters) belongs to the difficult excursions. One of the most beautiful parts, of this district, is the Green Lake (1551 meters) with the Frederick Shelter. House of the Hungarian Carpathian Association. It is situated to the North of the Lomnicz Peak and is overhung by the Karfunkel Tower (2139 meters).

A little further to the North, is the Kopa Pass, which leads to the Javorinka Valley and at the same time forms the boundary of the Tatra. Beyond this valley rise the Zips Magura, a very high mountain chain quite different in character to the Tatra. About half a century ago the Tatra were explored and made accessible to tourists. It was the Hungarian Carpathian Association which accomplished this work, first alone, and later, with the important help of the Hungarian Tourist Association and the Galicia-Tatra Association. Accommodation and communication are good, guides, ways and directions are to be found everywhere, -- so that tourists go there with great pleasure.
