At Plase, we catch sight of the Adriatic Sea and descend little by little to that fertile strip of land surrounding the Bay of Quarnero, where, in a luxuriant country whose vegetation reminds us of Italy, lies Fiume, the most important harbour of Hungary. This town, formerly quite Italian, both architecturally and ethnographically, has gradually become a truly international seaport, and now plays an important role in (he external commerce of Hungary.
The Stale has expended hundreds of millions to make Fiume a great seaport and to bind it, so-to-speak, to Hungary, by means of the costly railway over the Carst; but these sacrifices were crowned with success, for the shipping traffic of Fiume has increased extraordinarily; the number of incoming ships amounts yearly to more than 17,000, with a tonnage of five and a half millions. The total quantity of Exports and Imports amounts to 15,000,000 metric hundredweights with a value of 320,000,000 crowns.
