Besides the shipping traffic to distant parts of the world, that to Croatia, Dalmatia and Istria is also very lively. In the environs of Fiume, we notice the pretty little town, Buccari, lying in a picturesque bay: Portore, with its four-towned Frangepan Castle and large shipyard; and lastly the pretty bathing resort, Cirkvenica, opposite the Island of Veglia, much frequented in summer.
Beside Fiume, however, these places play but a small part, for their harbours are not large, and the large islands lying before them, separate them completely from the open sea. Fiume has risen of late years to great importance, and has gained much, through the direct communication with the two principal ports of Italy, Venice and Ancona and also since the Hungarian and other mail-steamers call regularly to take up the merchandise for Austria, Italy. Great Britain, France, British India and North America.
