The town itself, built like an amphitheatre at the foot of the Carst, contains much that is interesting, as well in the ancient quarters which still preserve their Italian character, as in the newer suburbs studded with beautiful gardens and modern villas. We must mention particularly, the palace of the Archduke Joseph and that of the Governor of Fiume: the Offices of the Adria Shipping Company, the Theatre, Market Halls, Naval Academy etc. and lastly the public garden. Of the numerous industrial concerns we will only mention the celebrated Whitehead Torpedo Works, the large Danubius Shipyard, the Tobacco Factory, the Rice and Starch Factories, and the Petroleum Refinery.

Fiume is dominated by the village of Tersatto, a much frequented pilgrimage resort, beautifully situated on a hill, from where one discovers a magnificent panorama; the Church of the Madonna del Mare, and the ancient Castle of the Frangipani will be visited with pleasure, by all strangers. From the turrets and bastions of the Castle, the view embraces all the Quarnero. To the right, on the Istrian coast, rises the imposing Mount Maggiore, and at its foot, lie the bathing-resorts, Abbazia and Lovrana. Opposite is the Gulf of Fiume, with its rocky, arid islands, studded with fishing-villages. Lastly, at our feet, extends the animated, bustling port of the town. It is a never-to-be-forgotten spectacle, and in the evening, becomes quite fairylike, with its thousands of shining lights, its light-houses, and illuminated boats.
