The Eastern part of Croatia Slavonia is a fertile plain, studded with little hills, and inhabited mostly by Servians. Besides some well-known bathing-resorts, such as Daruvar and Lipik, we find the important town of Eszek, situated on the right bank of the Drave, a stronghold since 1712, but above all, a commercial centre, with a population for the most part German; and some beautiful modern quarters. At the epoch of the Ottoman domination, Eszek was, so-to-speak, the door of Turkey; hundreds of thousands of Christians were here dragged over the bridge of the Drave, and taken into captivity.

Moreover, numerous bloody battles took place here up to 1687, and ended with the victory of Prince Eugene de Savoy, whose memory is perpetuated by a neighbouring village, called the Village of Eugene. About 40 kilometres; to the South of Eszek, we come to Diakovar, a pretty little town, with an imposing Cathedral in Roman-Gothic style, built by the architect , Schmidt and decorated with frescoes by Seitz. Further to the South East, along the banks of the Danube, extend the pretty hills of Fruskagora, whose slopes furnish the excellent wine Kamenica. Numerous ancient convents rise up on these hills, notably that of Krusedol, where rest the remains of King Milan of Servia.

At the foot of the Northern slope of the Fruskagora, on the bank of the Danube, we see the powerful fortress of Petervarad, and farther to the East, opposite the mouth of the Tisza, the village of Slankamen, where, in 1691, a great battle was fought; lastly at the confluence of the Danube and the Save, opposite Belgrade, the commercial city of Zimony, with a beautiful monument, commemorating the Millennium of Hungary.
