The progress of intellectual culture and especially of public instruction, was no less remarkable. In this respect, Budapest shows a many-sided and comprehensive activity and goes far beyond the prescribed rules. Nothing illustrates this activity, and the dimensions of this development, more clearly, than the fact that since 1873, the outlay for municipal school objects has risen from 400,000 crowns to 19,000,000, and that the municipality today maintains no fewer than 412 schools of different grades with 106,000 scholars (elementary schools, technical, continuation and intermediate schools, i.e. with the exception of high schools, every kind of educational institution).

Besides the municipal schools, there are in Budapest 204 other instructive institutions, which are maintained by the State, different religious bodies, and private subscription. A number of institutions for the instruction of adults, completes the educational activity of the town; such are, the city library, the training college for teachers, the Municipal Museum, the Aquincum Museum, and the magnificent Zoological Garden.
