The activity of the town in the field of adult education, naturally comprises only a proportionately small part of the whole active power; State and Society have taken upon themselves the most considerable part of this task, and contribute, through the maintenance of large Museums, Picture galleries, and public libraries, as also through an imposing number of scientific and cultural societies, to the uplifting of the general intellectual level and the diffusion of useful knowledge.
