Of the museums, we will only mention the National Museum, a noble edifice, with a mighty facade supported by Corinthian columns (constructed by Michael Pollak 1837-1847), containing a superb marble staircase, ornamented with frescoes, and a large Assembly Room. It is Budapest's oldest Museum, founded in 1802, and contains collections of antiques, natural history collections, and a large library. One ought also to visit the Museum of Decorative Arts; in Ulloi Avenue, and above all, the Agricultural Museum in the Town Park, containing some splendid and unique collections, which have received the unanimous approbation of all foreign specialists.

We may also mention the very interesting George Rath Museum (a private donation, containing masterpieces of Decorative Art and painting), the Museum of Traffic, the Museum of Technology, the Municipal Museum (in the Town Park), the Queen Elisabeth Memorial Museum (in the Royal Palace) and the Ernst Museum; lastly, the Museum of Fine Arts, an artistic collection of the first rank, situated in a large, classical edifice in the Town Park, built by Schickedanz and Herzog in Greek Renascence style. It originated with the Esterhazy Gallery bought by the State in 1871. since then it has been considerably enriched and today ranks with the most important Galleries of Europe. The Old Italian, as well as the Netherland Schools, are richly represented; we find here important works of Raphael, Luini, Correggio, Lotto, Piombo, Bassano, Tintoretto, Carravaggio, Tiepolo, as well as those of all the more important Netherland Masters. The real pride of the Gallery, however, is the Spanish section, in which Murillo and Goya are more prominently represented than in any other collection in Europe, excepting, of course, Madrid. The Modern Gallery also, contains several masterpieces by prominent foreign artists and many pictures by Hungarian Masters. Munkacsy, Zichy, Lotz, Szinnyei-Merse, Benczur, Ligeti, Laszlo and others.
