The activity of the municipal administration, had naturally to keep pace with the rapid outer development of the town, and the gratification of the most extreme demands, had imposed a great burden on it. The little provincial town became, in a short time, a capital of the civilized world, which had to repair, almost from one day to the next, the mistakes and omissions of centuries. If Budapest can vie today with the Western capitals, in respect of its intellectual culture, it is due, not only to government support, but chiefly to the great sacrifices which the citizens have made for their city.
