The broad-featured government policy, which was instituted, in the year 1907, displays a brisk activity in the sphere of municipal socialism. In comparison to the great sacrifices which the Municipality had always made for public hygiene and education, little had been done so far for the welfare of society in the modern sense of the word, and yet in this field, defects made themselves felt, whose removal or at least mitigation, could no longer be postponed. It was. before everything, the question of dwellings, which required the decided interference of the officials.
A series of former mistakes, and above all an unsuitable building statute, had made dwelling-houses exceedingly scarce and dear. This induced the municipality to build a colony of small houses with gardens for their own workpeople and officials, and also to set about the building of other small dwellings; at the same time, the State decided to build, at an outlay of 12 million crowns, 10,000 workmen's dwellings, some in the town itself (Ohegy in the 10th District), and some in the neighbouring borough Kispest; the greater part of these dwellings (as for instance, Wekerle-telep) are now completed.
