The bishopric of Eger was raised to an Archbishopric in 1804, and in 1832--1837 Archbishop Pyrker built a cathedral in Italian classical style (after the plans of Joseph Hild), the chancel of which was magnificently restored in 1904. Opposite the Church, stands the superb building of the archiepiscopal Lyceum (1765--1785), which contains a Library (with a magnificent ceiling-painting by J. L. Kracker) a large Hall with ceiling-paintings by Francis Sigrist, a chapel with frescoes by Maulpertsch, and a Museum with picture gallery. The once famous observatory has been closed recently. Eger, possesses also, several beautiful Churches, and the Monument of Dobo by Alois Strobl. The grave of this heroic defender can be seen in the fortress. The environments of Eger are charming and produce excellent red wine called "Bikaver".
