Northwards from this Carst district with its chalk plateaux and dolomites, stretch the Gomor-Szepes ore mountains which were especially prominent in olden times through their wealth of ore, and still possess important mineral treasures. This district is also rich in historical towns and old castles In the West, the ruins of the old castle Murany awake our interest. It is one of the oldest castles, and existed at the time of the Tartar invasion; later it fell into the hands of Giskras bohemian bandits, and became the menace of the district. The castle experienced its brightest period in the 17th Century) under the possession of the Szechy family. Here in 1645 took place the much sung love romance of the beautiful Marie Szechy and Francis Wesselenyi. The Castle of Krasznahorka near to Rozsnyo is also very interesting It has been in the possession of the Andrassy since 1575, and contains art treasures of the first rank. At the foot of the Castle Hill stands the beautiful Mausoleum of Countess Francisca Andrassy.
