Returning to the main line we continue our journey Northwards. The railway ascends the hills in huge sweeps and assumes the character of a mountain railway. The line is rich in a variety of natural beauties, hut the most beautiful part is formed by the environments of Kormoczbanya. This town lying below the Railway, is one of the most interesting of the Upper Hungarian mining towns. It was founded, like Beszterczebanya, in the 13th Century, by German immigrants, who carried on the mining industry, and has preserved much of its mediaeval character; its bastions and towers, particularly, recall the old towns of Germany. Through the old City Gate we arrive in the principal Square, where stand the Town-hall and the Franciscan Convent; next, the Church of St. Catherine, restored in 1886, ornamented by sculptures and frescoes of the 15th century; lastly the little Elizabeth Church, whose Gothic arch displays the Coat of Arms of the Anjou Kings. As a mining town, Kormoczbanya is today of little importance, but on the other hand, it possesses the only mint of Hungary, in which gold is coined ("Ducats of Kremnitz"); since 1660 it has been worked by machinery; a collection of the coins stamped since 3867, is to be seen in the Museum.
