Hungary and Budapest in Pictures - Trans-Danubia

We will begin our journey on the right bank of the Danube, with the so-called Dunantul i.e. Transdanubia -- a district which displays a most advanced civilization, and can boast of an ancient high culture centuries old.

The Romans had already highly civilized this district, and after the Magyars established themselves here, Transdanubia developed rapidly and brilliantly under the influence of its connection with the West. Beautiful buildings of great art-historical importance, which arose in the 12th and 13th centuries, are still eloquent proofs of its ancient prosperity. The fortunate circumstance, that this part of the Kingdom was less frequently attacked by the Turks, than the interior of Hungary, is, in a great measure, the reason why Transdanubia has been able to preserve its high culture, even to the present day. A visit to this part of the country therefore, awakes our interest in the greatest measure.
