Further on, the train reaches Brasso, a town beautifully situated on the South East border of Transylvania, in a valley surrounded by high, woodclad mountains, at the foot of Mount Czenk (957 meters). Nature and art have united to make Brasso one of the most interesting and beautiful towns in Hungary. It is an ancient town, famous as early as the 14th Century, for its industries, and was for centuries the centre of commerce with Romania. Some old towers and walls, the town hall built in 1420, the Kaufhaus dating from 1545, and above all, the celebrated protestant Church, called the Black Church (1385--1425), recall the time when Brasso was a great intellectual centre. Near to the Black Church, stands the statue of John Honterus, the Luther of Saxon Transylvania.
