From Marosvasarhely, the Szekler railway conducts us through the Maros Valley to the plateau of the Csik, surrounded by high mountains, and inhabited by Szekelys. In the heart of the mountains, about 10 kilometres distant from Marosheviz, lies the health-resort Borszek, in a most picturesque situation, at an altitude of 880 meters; the pure air of its mountains, its magnificent pine-woods, and its modern bathing establishments, are reputed all over Hungary. The principal spring (Fokut) yields, yearly, several million bottles of the celebrated Borszek Bitter water and the baths (Lobogo) with their cold water (9° C), charged with carbonic acid are a remarkable speciality of this watering-place.

The railway then conducts us via Gyergyoszentmiklos and Csikszeredato Tusnad, the most frequented resort of Transylvania. It lies amidst magnificent pine-woods, which also surround the beautiful Lake of St. Anne, situated at a height of 951 meters, about two hours distance from the town. Above the watering-place rises Mount Budos, with the celebrated Budos Cave, the floor of which is covered with rich deposits of carbonic acid and sulphuric hydrogen gases, which are successfully employed for healing purposes. These gases are so abundant in the deep air-strata that they asphyxiate the plants and animals, and even men can only enter the cave in an upright position, without danger of suffocation. Long conduits of 4 kilometres carry part of these gases to a factory, where they are employed for the production of liquid carbonic acid.
