The Russians leaving Hungary in the early 90's was one of the clearest signs of the lasting victory of democracy. While people deeply
appreciated this kind of independence at that time, nowadays more and more Hungarians think that they are getting attached to another
superpower, namely, the United States. Although Hungarians did not get invaded by NATO forces, as some radical politicians predicted
before Hungary joined the Organization, it does not take much to see the ties strengthening between Hungary and America.

Don't get me wrong, having good diplomatic relations with the strongest country in the world is important (aren't Hungarians lucky to have no
oil!), and I am sure that most Hungarians believe it is a nice gesture that our prime ministers visit president Bush (George W.) after "winning" the election.
But these ties sometimes are too tight - so tight that people do not share their politicians' views in certain matters. It would be harsh to
say that Hungary is getting invaded, but any Hungarian with interest in foreign relations must wonder how far this will go, and whether they will be allowed
to have a point of view of their own.
