Foreigners In Hungary - The "Chinese Invaders"

Changes in the way Hungarian perceive the Chinese community in Hungary

Foreigners in Hungary - The "Chinese invaders"

While in Western-European countries immigrants cause more and more problems, Hungarians in general have a totally different, non-radical approach to the subject. It may be true that we are not facing a huge mass of Muslim immigrants. But we have others we used to be worried about: the Chinese.

A few years earlier it was a common view among the citizens of Budapest that the Chinese are some sort of invaders. If we take a look at the Gypsies, we'll see that we tend to be intolerant towards people who are in some way different - and the Chinese are. But as time passed, the average citizen took a look around, and didn't see the "invaders" asking for anything, like the aforementioned minority. In fact, the only thing they did was starting enterprises and selling things for more than acceptable prices. And since most Hungarians just love to save money, what could be better than that?

Thus, the "invading force" shortly became one of the most accepted and widely appreciated minority in Hungary. Nowadays you can find thousands of shops, restaurants, and even plazas ran by Chinese. And if you ask around in Hungary, you'll find there's nothing wrong with that or "them". In the end, the story of the "Chinese invaders" truly became a story of success.
