Gypsies in Hungarian media

Positive attitudes towards the gypsies in Hungary

   Gypsies in Hungarian media

With respect to the public discrimination against gypsies in Hungary, most negative opinions do not seem to be ethnically motivated. Someone can badmouth minorities all day, only to sit down and watch a concert of Megasztár on TV in the evening. There are just as many talented young gypsies out there as Hungarians, and fortunately they are getting more and more coverage in the media. Although they rarely represent their traditional culture (idealized by most foreigners), they are still both unique and typical.

Perhaps the most popular such example is the Megasztár TV show, where talented amateur singers compete, and in the end, the best gets an opportunity to make an album, sponsored by the TV channel that runs the show. Many of the runner-ups, and some of the top 10 (and even last year's winner, Caramel) are ethnically gypsies, and since most of the Hungarians watch a TV on a regular basis, they might have more fans than some of the "regular" pop singers.

But world of pop music is not the only place you may find gypsies in the media, where they receive love and recognition. Hungary has its own gypsy reality show called Győzike, which portrays the life of the lead singer of the gypsy pop band Romantic. Although the show cannot offer more than a superficial glimpse into an upper class gypsy family, it has its fun moments, generating an enormous fan club for the entire family.

There are also many gypsy pop singers, rappers (LL Junior) and musicians in other genres (Emilio), which can be just as popular as Hungarian groups. Moreover, traditional gypsy folklore and music has had an ongoing popularity: you can find a TV or radio program gypsy music almost any time of the day. Strangely enough, these shows are more popular in the countryside, where people generally tend to have more prejudices towards the gypsies in their neighborhood.
