Gypsies are the largest and, in some opinions, the most problematic minority in Hungary. They are undoubtedly different from us, but in most cases, they really do not give a reason for the hatred many people harbor towards them. These feelings come from the common social problems in Hungary: in hard times people need someone to hate, and this omnipresent minority is just perfect for this. Most of these hate-mongers would say they dislike gypsies because they do not work and all of them are criminals, but if we take a look at the "white" population of Hungary, we will notice that we are not much different. Hungarians often fail to notice that being a criminal or unemployed is not a matter of color, but a common social problem for gypsies and whites alike. On the other hand, gypsies do not always help their own reputation either. Perhaps annoyed by the negative social response, some gypsies resent the idea of becoming part of the Hungarian society, the country and environment which has been unfriendly to them. The solution to the gap between white Hungarians and gypsies is a problem that will have to be solved with the participation of both parties. People of different ethnicities will have to learn to live and work together. N.
