Hungarians Learning Spanish

Thoughts of a Hungarian who is learning Spanish

   Hungarians Learning Spanish

Learning Spanish, for some reason, is considered an easy thing by most Hungarians. That is why many choose to learn it, even if most of them give up learning shortly afterwards. Although Spanish is not an easy language, Hungarians could profit a lot from it.

First of all, it is understood not only in Spain, but also in most countries in Central and South America (except for the biggest one, Brazil). Second, for a Hungarian, or someone who intends to work in Hungary, it is important that today only few people speak Spanish well, even though it is not a common requisite either. And third, Spanish will make learning other Romance languages, like Italian or Portuguese or even French, much easier.

Of course, any Hungarian who cares about being understood around the world, would have already learned another foreign language, most likely English. Although English is very useful in learning Spanish vocabulary, it is almost completely useless in trying to understand what people say in Spanish. In fact, often even Spanish won't help, especially when meeting Spanish speakers from South America. It is not simply the different set of words they use (seemingly innocent Spanish words, like "coger," could have another meaning associated with them), but they are also pronounced different.

Despite all of its difficulty, Spanish is a beautiful language. Not only because of how it sounds which is a matter of taste - but also because of the many things that have already been said and written in Spanish. Such beauty does not translate well and one has to learn the language to appreaciate it.
