Learning a foreign language in Hungary is pretty much like learning it in any other country. Basically, we have three common ways to do it. First of all, there are self-learning courses available on cassettes, DVDs, and even on the Internet. Although these are probably not as popular as in other countries, you will find a wide variety of them around. With these you have the advantage of being able to study whenever you have free time; their drawback is that they do not force you to learn. Generally speaking, these products do not have a high success rate in Hungary because the average Hungarian looses determination and motivation easily.
Second, there are private teachers. They should be mentioned along with the third group, language schools, since most schools offer such services as well. Many Hungarians believe this is the best way to learn a language. While you get a lot of attention from the teacher and the lessons are tailor-made for you, this is also the most expensive solution, and the majority of Hungarians cannot afford to pay for a tutor.
The third choice is language schools. There is a wide variety of them scattered across Budapest and in other major cities. Their advertisements are everywhere so it is not hard to find them. Their prices range from very cheap to almost those of a private tutor, depending on the course and, sometimes, the quality of the service. In Hungary, the best advice would be neither to choose the cheapest, nor the most expensive course. Generally speaking, I would recommend the bigger schools (e.g. Katedra), not only to ensure the quality and a good selection of courses, but also to be able to keep on studying.
If you try to learn a less common language, you may notice that the more advanced level you reach, the harder it gets to find a course (since most language schools make it a policy not to start a course with less than five or four students). Beside his or her personal preferences, the average language learner in Hungary has to consider the financial implications of learning a language. This is why the best solution for most Hungarians is a good language school in the medium price range.
