English vocabulary - Table of Contents
The Logoi.com Dictionary of English Usage is a completely free online resource for the study of advanced English
vocabulary. It is designed as a study tool to prepare for examinations such as GRE, TOEFL, SAT, GMAT, LSAT. We are
aware that there are many available classes and software applications to increase your vocabulary but we believe that
our dictionary offers some added benefits.
First of all, it is free, which is perhaps the greatest bonus. Second, it is a dictionary based on word usage,
rather than definitions.
Breaking with the common lexicographic tradition of supplying word definitions and part-of-speech
information, we decided to define the words in our dictionary solely based on their usage in context. Thus for
each word you have some sample sentences which will aid you understanding what the word in question refers to when
used in context.
The context in the dictionary comes from a corpus compiled from dozens of English language novels, both English
and American, and translations of foreign novels. Thus the context is genuine, this is the way writers and translators
actually use these words.
