The Signs and Symptoms of a Drug Addiction

Being able to recognize the signs and symptoms of a drug addiction can help you save a life. If you or a loved one is showing these substance abuse symptoms, you need to take action immediately. The sooner you act, the better the chances are of the addiction being beaten.

Here are some of the top signs and symptoms of a drug abuse problem:

  • Needing the drug on a daily basis to get by -- The key difference between addicts and recreational users is that the addict feels he (or she) needs the drug on a daily basis (or more often) just to get by. The addict may convince himself he needs the drug to deal with a physical or emotional pain. Or he may believe that if he doesn't have the drug he'll get sick. He might want to stop but just can't. Or he may not have a reason for his drug usage at all, but he still makes sure he has the drug every day.
  • Always has a supply of the drug on hand -- A true addict always makes sure he has a supply of his drug of choice easily accessible at all times. Running out of the drug isn't an option for the addict. They want the drug available whenever they feel they need it.
  • Spending money on drugs without having the money -- Drug addicts will often spend themselves completely broke to stay in supply of their drug. They'll forego the basic necessities in life to get the much-needed fix. Many times, they'll turn to friends or family members to ask to borrow money. With or without knowing it, the family members enable the addict, giving him the money he needs to get more of his drug. If you have a loved one with a substance abuse problem, never lend him money as you're allowing the problem to worsen.
  • Allowing the drug to interfere with life -- When the addiction spins out of control, it can turn the addict's life completely upside down. Addicts may drop out of school, get fired from their jobs, end important relationships with family and loved ones, and sacrifice their basic needs just to get their drug. Drug addiction causes complete disarray in the addict's life, and this makes it even harder for them to climb out of the hole.
  • Going to extreme lengths to get the drug -- Addiction can cloud the addict's judgment, causing him to do things he'd never normally do. Those with a substance abuse problem have gone to extreme lengths, such as stealing or violence, to get their drug.

A drug addiction must be taken seriously. If you or someone you love is showing these symptoms, please don't wait to take action. If left untreated, the addiction can spiral out of control, putting the addict and those around him in danger.

Drug addiction treatment programs can help people overcome their addiction. With the help of addiction experts, you or your loved one can get on the path to recovery and to enjoying a happy, healthy life.

Bio: My name is Melanie Bochon and drug addiction treatment saved my daughter's life. As difficult as it was, I'm thankful for our journey though, as I now have a passion for educating others and creating awareness.
