STROKE PREVENTION

Stroke, Sign and Symptoms of a Stroke, Stroke Prevention

A stroke is a very common medical condition and infact is a major cause of mental and physical disability. However, few people are aware of the signs and symptoms that could warn about a stroke. In short, it could be said that a stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is severely restricted or stopped. The human brain performs the important task of controlling vital body functions like movement, speech, hearing, sight etc. To keep functioning normally, it is important that the brain gets a regular and continous supply of oxygen and other nutrients.

Oxygen and other nutrients are supplied to the brain through the blood stream. When a stroke occurs, blood supply to the brain is restricted to the entire brain or to portions of the brain. The brain is then starved of oxygen and nutrients and gets damaged. The vital functions affected by this brain damage would depend on which portion and to what extent the brain damage has occured. Since different parts of the brain have different functions, a stroke could cause problems in talking, hearing, seeing and even walking normally.

Explained in simple terms, a stroke could occur in two ways. The first type of stroke is when the blood vessel has an internal blockage due to a blood clot or other reason. The second type of stroke is when the blood vessel actually bursts and releases blood into the brain or around it. Both these types of strokes affect normal blood flow through the blood stream and starve the brain of blood.

Tremendous advancement has been made in medical sciences to diagnose, treat and even prevent a stroke. However to get the benefit of these medical advances, it is important that the stroke victim is provided with medical attention as soon as possible. The faster the treatment the better the chances of reducing or eliminating the deadly effects of a stroke. It then becomes very important for people nearby the stroke victim to actually realise that he or she has a stroke.

Luckily there is a very simple test that anyone can perform to detect the possibility of a stroke. Read these steps and memorize them, teach them to everyone that you know. The chances of treating a stroke are vastly increased if timely medical attention is given. If you have tried this test on a person you suspect of having a stroke and are in any doubt, play safe and rush the person to a medical expert.

Here is the simple stroke test:

- Ask the person to smile. If there is any drooping on one side of the face, it is a sign of a stroke.

- Ask the person to raise both arms, if the person has problems keeping the arms at the same level, take it to be a sign of a stroke.

- Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. If the speech is slurred or unclear, the possibility of a stroke is high.

The presence of any of these signs is a cause for alarm and medical attention should be sought. It is not necessary that all these stroke signs appear together. Also, remember that most stroke cases are painless so do not feel safe if the person does not complain of a pain. In many cases the stroke signs could disappear but this is only temporary and can point towards a more full blown stroke from occuring in the future.

We have put together a complete report on strokes that you should read. You can also send this link to your friends and acquaintances because it is bound to save lives and reduce the crippling effects that follow a stroke.
