The following news appeared in the March 18, 1917 issue of the Weekly Dispatch, describing a conviction of a gipsy woman sheltering a war deserter.
"A gipsy's romance ended somewhat prosaically in the Nottinghampshire County Police Court yesterday, when Angelina Bosworth, a typical young gipsy woman, was charged with concealing a deserter.
"Inspector Harrop stated that he saw the defendant in her caravan at Carlton, just outside Nottingham. Asked if she had seen a deserter named Watts, she denied all knowledge of him, but the witness decided to search the van, where he ultimately found Watts concealed in a small cupboard beneath a flock bed. Watts admitted being absent since last April. After the police left the defendant disappeared, but her van was traced to Mansfield.
"She now assured the magistrates that she had no idea that Watts was a deserter, for he told her he had been discharged. She denied having concealed him, but admitted that she might have married him through they had known each other only a month. She was sentenced to six weeks' hard labour."
