This is a first-hand description of the Great Wall of China by Romyn Hitchcock from 1893. What makes this account so interesting is that it still preceded the Boxer Uprising and a number of events in Chinese history which left permanent marks of the Great Wall. Also, Hitchcock talks about the lack of prehistoric archeological sites in China in a few decades history will prove him completely wrong. There are many illustrations in the story etched from Romyn Hitchcock's own photographs taken at the wall. Today, the fate of the photographs is unknown and all that remain are these illustrations. They are, however, still valuable for documenting the conditions at this time.
