The descriptions of aspects of Japanese life presented here come from General Miles's book called Thrilling Stories of the Russian-Japanese
War, originally published in 1904. The Russo-Japanese War ended a year later in the absolute victory of Japan over its giant neighbor,
an ending most analysts did not expect at the time.
