NAVAJO INDIANS STARVING BECAUSE OF DROUGHT
Government helpt to aid the starving Navajos in Utah and Arizona

Navajo Indians starving because of drought

The Navajo Indians had a bad year in 1902. Because of the drought during the summer they were going to starve during the winter. Here is what the August 8, 1902 issue of the Idaho Daily Statesman reported of the situation:

INDIANS NEED HELP -- Navajoes Likely to Starve Unless Government Gives Them Assistance.

Durango, Colo., Aug. 8. -- The Navajo Indians have never been in such misery as now since 1868, when Kit Carson had them rounded up in a corral at Defiance. The extreme heat and drouth in the Navajo-country have ruined the ranges, and ponies, cattle, sheep and Coats are starving by scores daily. The Indiana have had little else than horse meat to eat for some time, and unless the government will come to their assistance they must starve during the coming winter.

Three weeks later, a decision has been made to help the Navajo with supplies. The August 29 issue of the Bismark Daily Tribune ran a report on how the government was going to help the Indians.

MANY INDIANS STARVING -- Destitution among Navajos due to Excessive Drought

Washington, Aug. 29 -- Commissioner of Indian Affairs Jones has received a telegram from Senator Rawlins of Utah reporting that 6,000 Indians on the Navajo reservation in the southern part of his state are starving and requesting that assistance be dispatched them. The destitution is caused by the lack of vegetation due to excessive drought.

Commissioner Jones has received authority from the secretary of the interior to expend 20,000 with which to purchase subsistence supplies in the open market to relieve the starving Indians.
