PERHAPS no catastrophe involving danger and possibly death to a large number of persons produces such a sickening feeling of terror as an earthquake. The rocks and the everlasting hills have furnished similes for a time immemorial for all that was stable and abiding. But when terra final belies its appellation, and begins to heave and toss like the waves of the sea, it cannot be wondered at if these who are made to reel to and fro and stagger like drunken men, are at their wits' end and palsied with fear, Such has evidently been the case in the terrible disaster which has befallen some of the inhabitants of the province of Cashmere, in Northern India. Even these who at first maintained some degree of composure and self-control seem to have become utterly demoralised as one shock followed another. It is not difficult to understand this. No defence is possible against an earthquake. There is no taking refuge in a place of safety when the crust of the earth breaks up. Even these who flee to the rivers and lakes, as some of the inhabitants of Cashmere seem to have done on this melancholy occasion, have no security, for upheavals may take place is the bed of the water, and these on its surface be engulfed. "What is the extent of the loss of life is not yet known, but an earthquake taking place in a populated district of necessity leaves the survivors in a wretched plight. It destroys their houses, their cattle, their crops, and other property. It puts an end for the time being to their means of gaining a livelihood, and often leaves many of them homeless, starving, and bereaved. The occurrence is a most deplorable one for these who have lost their lives by it and for these who survive to suffer. The pecuniary loss to the province will no doubt be a heavy one; but the government of Cashmere is tributary to Her Majesty the Queen, and its inhabitants will not be left to starve any more then if they lived in Ireland or in Lancashire.
