   Central Asia 1885

THE King of Denmark will have an interesting academic problem submitted to him as to the superior powers of understanding and interpretation enjoyed by M. de Giers and Lord Granville respectively, and having given a solemn verdict upon this important psychological question, the two Cabinets will say "how very interesting," and proceed as if nothing had occurred. Was this what the country expected when it unanimously sanctioned the vote of eleven millions? But this despatch

which contemptuously grants Lord Granville a merely nominal concession takes note for the Czar of the surrender of every other point at issue. The Joint Commission is dissolved before its members ever met, and the affront put upon Sir Peter Lumsden is tacitly condoned. The frontier question is settled in London in spite of Lord Granville's reiterated refusals to sanction this course, and is settled in complete harmony with the pretensions put forward by M. Lessar. And yet we are told that we are "cringing pessimists" if we fail to detect in this wholesale surrender a signal triumph for British diplomacy. The verdict of the country upon the whole transaction will be that we blundered into false position under the guidance of our rulers, that we floundered miserably for a time, and then extricated ourselves at the expanse of our dignity, our prestige, and, it is not too much to say, our honour.
