THE Republique Francaise, commenting at length on the return of Lord Rosebery from Berlin, remarks that he must have carried with him the impression that Prince Bismarck is in harmony with all the other Powers with regard to the future settlement of Egypt. Another proof of the isolation of England, remarks the Republique, may be found in the position taken up by all the Powers at the Sanitary Conference at Rome. The Republique concludes its article in the following terms: "Mr. Gladstone could very well crown the work of his whole life by effacing all trace of a momentary weakness, rejecting any temptation to effect an annexation or a protectorate, restoring to Europe what belongs to Europe and to Egypt what is of Egypt. The fruits of so courageous and so intelligent a resolution would soon make themselves manifest."
