Strange as it may seem but the sun in China is red. Not in reality but in all of the songs (especially revolutionary) and Chinese folklore in general. Interesting to see this very verbal depiction of the sun -- in the picture it is indeed red. At the same time the cosmic dominance of the sun and its rays is very important as a reference to the omnipresent good power in the world.
The action of the composition is placed between two rows of red hearts filled with Chinese characters. The total of eight characters say, "we fight against SARS with unity." The main hero on the image is shown in an orange T-shirt and can be undoubtedly identified as the artist himself. Similar to some of mediaeval depictions, a smaller caption to the right of the figure provides the name: it is a boy from the city of Shijiazhuang called Zhang Shengzu. A similar caption is seen above the evil creature on the left side of the composition: SARS. These four letters are written using the Roman (i.e. English) alphabet, which became a general practice during the epidemic.
Another similarity with mediaeval iconography is the depiction of the SARS monster. It is evil to the core, with blue colors, sharp zigzagged lines and sharp teeth. Its fingers and toes follow the same zigzagged style, adding to the overall disturbedness of the figure. The hands and toes of the hero, on the other hand, are completely covered, undoubtedly in an effort to avoid the sharp corners.
SARS is shown as one central figure with three smaller satellite incarnations. The small dots around him must refer to the fact that it is not an entity with a stable shape but something that constantly transforms and changes its appearance. The parallel with the legend of Saint George fighting evil in the form of a snake or dragon is obvious. The boy is strong and courageous, confidently striking out towards the monster. The monster is already half defeated, victory is immanent.
The colors of the composition are also carefully chosen. Warm colors dominate the scene, in sharp contrast with the cold blueness of the monster. This contrast gives the impression that SARS is an intruder in this otherwise perfect world where the sun is red, the field is green and the flowers are blooming.
