   The expulsion of Count Leo Tolstoi from the Orthodox Churchs

Leo Tolstoi A news lead from St. Petersburg dated January 7, 1899 states that "The Procurator-General of the Holy Synod, which superintends religious matters in Russia, desires the expulsion of Count Tolstoi, the famous novelist and social reformer, for encouraging the religious sect known as Donkobortsi."

Leo Tolstoi by this time has completed his main masterpieces, including War and Peace (1863-69) and Anna Karenina (1875-77). His deepening interest in religious matters is also signified by the appearance of the novel Resurrection later this year (1899). By this time he was already famous not only in Russia but also in the West.
