Reached the plateau at 1.30 p.m. After tiffin, at 2.30 p.m., we resumed 2.15 our journey to Huang Lung. From Tien Chih the road first descends and then again leads up another mountain. The scenery is magnificent; in fact the grandest we have seen. Big streams rush down from the mountains, forming magnificent waterfalls and big pools. The force of the streams is here also utilized for the moving of water-wheels for the manufacture of joss-stiok powder. It is difficult to tear oneself away from the grand scenery on the latter part of the road to Huang Lung. The position of the temple is visible at a considerable distance, being marked by 3 large trees.
I measured one of them and it took 4 men to span its trunk. Huang Lung, like so many other temples of this district, was destroyed by the rebels, but has been partially recon- structed. It lies secluded in the mountains and the accommodation is fairly comfortable. Arrived at 4.30 p.m. I descended to a pool and had a swim. In the evening the cold was intense and we retired early to rest.
Walked this day 6,5 hours.
11th November. It generally took two hours from the time of rising to get our party on the way. This morning, however, in consequence of the cold, things were hur- ried on and we started at 7 a.m. on our re turn. By another road than that by which we came, we reached Tien Chib at 8.15 a.m. Here our guide left us, though we had en- gaged him to accompany us back to the temple. We gave him 180 cash. From the slippery nature of the stones the descent from Tien Chih on the steps is very fatiguing. We reached the foot of the gorge at 10.20 a.m. After tiffin at 11.40 a.m., we started for Kiukiang, making Taiping Kung at 2 p.m. and reaching the Custom House at 5.30 p.m.
Walked this day 9,5 hours.
From beginning to end the trip was most enjoyable. We had no trouble of any kind on the way.
To see fine scenery, I should recommend the same route, and with more time, I am confident that many beautiful places can be found in the neighbourhood of the track we have followed.
I should advise a future tourist to spend the second night at Wanshan, to visit from there Hsin Fung-tzu and Huang-yai Pagoda, proceeding the next day to Kuei Tsung, and, if he feels so inclined, to go up to the iron Pagoda. The priests told us that about 10 Ii from the temple there were hot springs which would probably be worth a visit. For the remainder of the journey- I have no change to propose. I paid 250 cash a day to the coolies and they provided their own food. For our lodging at night we paid 300 cash every- where, with the exception of Kuei Tsung, where we gave 1000 cash. I much regretted that I had no pocket barometer with me to measure the heights, and no one should start without being pro- vided with such an instrument. Very little information is to be got out of the guides, and as for distances, no correct information is to be obtained from the country people.
