The Matrix trilogy started out with the original movie in 1999. It was something never seen before, something unique, something that did not exist in popular culture at that time. Although in philosophy, literature, and many other sciences, we find the idea of a reality we cannot perceive, this movie gave an opportunity to the public, the "average people" to experience this in an easily comprehensible form.
It is hard to pinpoint whether the success of the movie was based on the use of different mythical and philosophical theories, or the revolutionary visual effects shown on-screen, or the clever and catching story. The follow-ups indicate it was the appropriate mixture of these three elements. The Matrix: Reloaded, the follow-up which some people did not expect, and thus, did not adopt very well, changed this mixture: kept the "action-level", and added more theoretical - theological content to the story. Maybe because of not being so comprehensible anymore, or just because of the unexpectedness of the film, it divided the audience. Some people became convinced that Matrix is telling them the meaning of life, while others simply did not understand, or did not care about the far-fetched meaning behind the movie.
The third part of the movie, strangely enough, did not grow up to the expectations of either group. After creating a unique point of view with the first film, and adding some arguments with the sequel, the Watchowski brothers created a pure sci-fi / action piece out of the third episode. It did not just ruin the pleasant memories of the first part, but alienated the hard-core fans, who expected even deeper layers of the eastern philosophy from the final episode. However the story had a tragic turn, and finally seemed to close and solve the whole trilogy, but it did not do it in a satisfactory way. Because of this disappointment, nowadays the Matrix is barely mentioned, and became a far less successful franchise than anyone had hoped after the well-built and extraordinary first episode.
