The pictures of battles below come from four different traditions. The first picture is a painting
by Tintoretto from 1588. Its title is Battle Between Turks and Christians.
The second picture is a painting of Jacques-Louis David depicting the battle of Thermopylae between
the Persians and the Greeks. It is entitled Leonidas at Thermopylae. It was painted in 1814.
The third picture is The Battle of Waterloo. It was painted by Robert Hillingford in the 19th century.
The fourth picture is a vintage propaganda postcard from 1905. Its theme is the Russian-Japan War,
and it shows Cossacks in the battle.
