Pictures of the past is a collection of visual representations (i.e. images) of some of the main concepts and figures in our culture. These images come from the past but they determine the way we see our past today. They are both iconic and archetypical, powerful manifestation of our cultural consciousness. They are not so much pictures of the material world around us but cultural images of the main forces in our civilization. They represent how we see things important to us, rather than how these things are in reality.
