Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a Russian writer -- his full name was Count Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoi.
Next to Dostoievsky, he is regarded as the greatest novelist of the 19th century. His
masterpieces War and Peace and Anna Karenina are still one of the top
selling literary books.
The first picture is a photograph of Leo Tolstoy at work, writing. This was taken during the last years of his life.
The second picture shows Tolstoy in 1900 at his estate Yasnaya Poliana with the writer Maxim Gorky.
The third picture is a photo of Tolstoy as a young army officer during the Crimean War. These were the years he was
later ashamed of himself, as he wrote later in his life.
The fourth picture shows Tolstoy in 1903 with his daughter Tatiana Lvovna. He had a total of 13 children.
