Satan is one of the oldest images in Western mythology, predating Christianity or other current religions. It is commonly understood that Satan is just another name for the
devil but the actual history of this mythical personage is much more complex.
The pictures of Satan below come from four different traditions. Picture one is
a painting by Raphael called Archangel Michael slays Satan.
The second is a postcard from a painting of Satan by V.A. Kotarbinsky.
The third picture is a modern pop culture Satan on a magnet.
The fourth picture is the cover of a vintage pulp magazine called Detective Fiction Weekly. Satan here is quite theatrical.
